Before submitting your game design you should check what type of games we have already published. Even though we published a variety of games from simple card games to highly complex games all of our games have something in common. They all have a certain highlight or hook e.g. mechanics that allow the players to win (or lose) in different ways using various play styles. Moreover, board games for kids as well as games of skill, trivia games or communication based games are not our area of work and are therefore unlikely to be published by us.
We can only accept two submissions per author per month.
You can present your design to multiple publishers at a time but we need to be informed immediately if other publishers show greater interest in a game you sent us.
how do i contact hans im glück verlag about a design?
Please send us the ruleset as a PDF document (preferably smaller than 5MB) and a picture of your design via e-mail at spielidee(at)hans-im-glueck.de. Do not forget to number the pages and make sure that your ruleset is readable.
In general, we will contact you within a couple of days after your submission. If we like the game we will ask for a prototype. Having received the prototype we will contact you again. Normally, the evaluation and testing process takes 3-6 months. Afterwards prototypes will be returned to you.
how should the prototype look like?
The prototype should be playable. All material must be provided. The material needs to be functional! You want our testers to have fun while testing your game, so try not to frustrate them by sending in unhandy prototypes.
Thus, please do not use materials like snippets of cardboard, which are difficult to handle and ineligible for testing purposes. The game board should not be rolled up or folded. A better way would be a game board consisting of several pieces, which can be arranged together, in order to avoid curling of the board itself or shifting of other material.
However, your prototype must neither be lavishly illustrated nor professionally manufactured.
Of course, we won't accept prototypes, that promote misanthropy, racism, sexism, homophobia, capital crime or include similar topics. We will also look closely and critically at topics, which are sensitive in a historical context. For example, colonialization, crusades or wars, hardly convey anything good.
Moreover, we do not publish games, whose designer(s) exhibit and share racist, sexist, homophobic or misanthropic ideology, or the like.
how to protect your game idea
expansions and carcassonne
We are also interested in ideas for expansions. However, ideas for expansions are not always unique. Sometimes it happens that we get similar ideas multiple times and often the author of the game had similar ideas for an expansion.
We want to treat everybody who submits his ideas with respect. We have to mention, however, that you are not implicitly the author of a game idea if you have submitted an idea with a resembling title or resembling game mechanics. This is important for expansions and especially for Carcassonne.
Therefore we won't look at expansion ideas for Carcassonne anymore!
